Signing of Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation for the Operation of Green Kiosks in the Limassol District

As part of the implementation of Action C2 of the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project, titled “Installation and Operation of Green Kiosks for Recyclable Materials,” a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation (MoU) has been prepared with the aim of ensuring the smooth operation of the Green Kiosks in the Limassol District.

On 12 September 2025, the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed between:

  • the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (Competent Authority and owner of the Green Kiosks),
  • the Limassol District Self-Government Organization (Operating and Supervisory Authority),
  • the Limassol Development Agency (ANEL) and
  • the Troodos Development Company (ANET), both of which participate in the partnership structure of the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project (Implementing Bodies for the operation).

This agreement aims to ensure effective collaboration and clear allocation of responsibilities among the participating entities. Specifically, through the signing of this MoU, the Limassol District Local Government Organization, with the consent of the Department of Environment, delegates to the Limassol Development Agency and Troodos Development Company certain responsibilities related to the operation of the Green Kiosks within the Limassol District.

These responsibilities include:

  • the daily management and operation of the Green Kiosks,
  • monitoring their effectiveness, and
  • collecting and submitting relevant operational data until 2029.

The purpose of this MoU is to ensure that the operation of the Green Kiosks is fully aligned with current legislative provisions and the requirements of the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project, for the period up to 2029.

This collaboration represents a key prerequisite for the efficient functioning of the Green Kiosks in the Limassol District — an infrastructure that enables residents, especially in rural and semi-mountainous areas, to actively participate in recycling. At the same time, it contributes to the proper management of municipal solid waste and to achieving Cyprus’s environmental objectives.

The signing of this Memorandum marks another important step towards the comprehensive implementation of the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project and further strengthens cooperation between public and local authorities, united by a shared goal — the transition to a zero-waste society.
