Within the framework of Action C2 of the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project, entitled “Installation and Operation of Green Kiosks for Dry Recyclables,” a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation (MoU) has been prepared with the aim of ensuring the smooth operation of the Green Kiosks.
On 21 July 2025, the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed between:
- the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (Competent Authority and owner of the Green Kiosks),
- the Nicosia District Local Government Organization (Operating and Supervisory Body), and
- the Troodos Development Company, which participates as a partner in the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project (Implementing Body for the operation).
This agreement aims to ensure effective collaboration and clear allocation of responsibilities. Specifically, through this signing, the Nicosia District Local Government Organization, with the consent of the Department of Environment, delegates to the Troodos Development Company certain responsibilities related to the operation of the Green Kiosks in the Nicosia District. These responsibilities include:
- overseeing the daily operation of the Green Kiosks,
- monitoring their efficiency and performance, and
- collecting and submitting relevant operational data until 2029.
This Memorandum has been signed with the purpose of aligning the operation of the Green Kiosks with the applicable legislative provisions and the requirements of the LIFE IP Zero Waste Cyprus project for the period up to 2029.
This cooperation represents a key step toward the effective functioning of the Green Kiosks in the Nicosia District — an infrastructure that enables residents of remote areas to actively participate in recycling, while contributing to the proper management of municipal solid waste and the achievement of the country’s environmental objectives.
As a next step, similar Memoranda of Understanding and Cooperation are planned to be signed for the Green Kiosks in the Districts of Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos, involving the respective District Self-Government Organizations and Development Companies participating in their operation.
