The operation of the first two Reuse Shops in Cyprus was officially launched with an informative event held on May 23, 2025 , at Malounta Green Point. The two Reuse Shops are located at Malounta Green Point and in Linou, respectively.
The event was organized by the Department of Environment with the aim of introducing these new facilities and informing attendees about their design and operation.
The event opened with a welcome address from the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, delivered on her behalf by Ms. Ioanna Constantinidou, Head of the Circular Economy Unit of the Department of Environment. In her remarks, the Minister emphasized that the Reuse Shops mark a significant step forward in Cyprus’ efforts towards sustainable municipal waste management and the transition to a circular economy. She highlighted both the environmental and social benefits of these facilities, noting that they not only reduce the disposal of usable items and minimize landfill waste, but also foster a culture of responsible consumption and respect for natural resources and society.
Further addresses were delivered by Mr. Petros Hadjicostas, Director of the Troodos Development Agency Company, and Mr. Constantinos Yiorkadjis, President of the Nicosia District Local Government Organization. Mr. Hadjicostas presented the framework of the LEADER Programme, stressing the critical importance of collaboration between local and state entities in implementing such projects. Mr. Yiorkadjis spoke about the contribution of the District Local Government Organization in ensuring the effective operation of these new shops.
The event concluded with a tour of the Malounta Reuse Shop, followed by a networking session with light refreshments, where attendees exchanged views and suggestions to support the smooth operation and long-term sustainability of the shops.
Following the successful launch event, the operation of the Reuse Shops at the Malounta and Linou Green Points has officially commenced. Both shops operate during the Green Points’ regular opening hours, under the supervision of designated staff. While the shops are owned by the Department of Environment, their daily management has been entrusted to the Nicosia District Local Government Organization, in accordance with current legislation and a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding between the two entities.
The establishment of the first two Reuse Shops was made possible through the LEADER Cooperation Project, with €20,220 (excluding VAT) provided by the Rural Development Programme 2014–2020. The total project cost amounted to €58,000 (excluding VAT), which also included expenditures for information and promotional activities.
Building on the experience gained from these initial operations, a nationwide expansion is planned to create a network of 36 Reuse Shops — one at each existing or newly established Green Point across Cyprus. This ambitious expansion is expected to be financed by the state budget, while the design and promotional aspects are integrated into the broader framework of the LIFE-IP Zero Waste Cyprus project.
In parallel with the development of this national network, the project also foresees the establishment of two Repair and Reuse Centers in Nicosia and Limassol, further enhancing the circular economy infrastructure under the LIFE-IP Zero Waste Cyprus project.
Through small daily actions, such as reusing items, every citizen can contribute to meaningful change. The LIFE-IP Zero Waste Cyprus project encourages the public to utilize the free delivery and collection services available, fostering a more responsible, sustainable, and environmentally conscious lifestyle.
